Introduction
A serverless AWS foundation was designed to power a digital platform that helps air passengers claim compensation for flight disruptions across multiple regulatory frameworks, including EU Regulation 261/2004 (EC261), UK passenger rights regulations, the Montreal Convention, and Turkish aviation laws. Built using AWS serverless services and automation-driven infrastructure, the platform enables fast eligibility assessment, claim processing, airline negotiations, and payment handling-while maintaining operational simplicity and cost efficiency.
By combining cloud-native technology with legal expertise, the solution delivers a highly responsive, scalable system capable of handling unpredictable traffic spikes during large-scale flight disruptions. The serverless-first approach ensures the platform can grow across regions and regulatory regimes without increasing infrastructure complexity, while remaining aligned with AWS best practices for security and reliability.
About the Client
The client is a technology-driven passenger rights company focused on simplifying airline compensation claims across Europe. Passengers submit flight details through a user-friendly application, where automated workflows assess eligibility, manage legal processes, and handle payouts-removing complexity from a traditionally manual and time-consuming experience.
Challenges and Requirements
As a fast-moving, customer-centric organization, the client required a cloud foundation that prioritized speed, simplicity, and scalability. Key requirements included:
- Serverless AWS – First Platform
Minimize infrastructure management by relying on Serverless AWS services wherever possible. - Rapid Time-to-Market
Enable fast development and deployment cycles without compromising security. - AWS-Native, Fully Managed Services
Maximize the use of services such as AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, and Amazon DynamoDB to ensure scalability and resilience. - Automation & Cost Control
Provision and scale infrastructure through automation while maintaining predictable, usage-based costs across the Serverless AWS platform.
Solution
To meet these requirements, ITGix designed and implemented a serverless-first AWS platform, aligned with AWS best practices for security, scalability, and operational efficiency.
Infrastructure as Code & Deployment Model
A dual Infrastructure-as-Code approach was adopted:
- Terraform was used to provision foundational components such as AWS accounts, networking, IAM, and DNS.
- AWS SAM defined and deployed application-level services, including API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, Cognito, and SQS.
This separation ensured a secure baseline while enabling fast, developer-friendly application deployments.
Fully Managed Serverless Services
Application logic runs on AWS Lambda behind API Gateway, with Amazon DynamoDB providing a fully managed, scalable data store. This combination delivers predictable performance, built-in availability, and hands-off scaling-without the need for database or server management.
Security & Governance by Design
- Multi-Account Architecture
Clear isolation between environments (e.g., development and production) using a multi-account AWS setup. - Least-Privilege Access
IAM roles and policies follow least-privilege principles, relying exclusively on short-lived credentials. - Secrets Management
Sensitive configuration data is securely stored and managed using AWS Secrets Manager.
Observability & Automation
- Centralized Monitoring
Logs, metrics, and alerts are collected via Amazon CloudWatch, including health checks for critical endpoints. - CI/CD Automation
Automated pipelines ensure deployments are repeatable, consistent, and auditable across both infrastructure and application layers.

This serverless-first design allowed the customer to move quickly without sacrificing control, security, or visibility. By combining AWS-native services with automation-driven infrastructure, the solution delivers a balanced architecture that supports rapid innovation while remaining cost-efficient and operationally simple. The result is a scalable AWS foundation purpose-built to support long-term business growth and evolving regulatory requirements.
Business Outcomes
Faster Feature Delivery
The serverless-first architecture enabled rapid iteration and streamlined deployments, allowing the client to release new features quickly and adapt to changing passenger needs.
Cost-Efficient Scaling
Built-in autoscaling and a pay-as-you-go pricing model ensure the platform scales seamlessly during traffic spikes-such as widespread flight disruptions-while avoiding unnecessary operational costs.
Operational Simplicity & Growth Readiness
By relying on fully managed AWS services, the client can focus on innovation and customer experience, confident that their platform is secure, resilient, and ready to scale across European markets.
Together, these outcomes provided the customer with a future-proof serverless foundation that supports continuous growth without increasing operational complexity. The platform is now positioned to scale confidently during peak disruption events while maintaining predictable costs, strong security, and high availability. This allows the business to focus on expanding its services and improving passenger experience-backed by an AWS architecture designed for long-term success.
